About the Summer School

Each year since 2011, the Shanghai Summer School is sponsored by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and held by Tongji University. In 2023, the summer school will be hosted by the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University, and undergraduate and graduate students from Europe will be invited to participate in all the programs in person.

Shanghai has long aimed to become “City of Innovation,” “City of Humanity,” and “City of Ecology.” It has been widely accepted as a sustainable urbanization model in China and the world as well. The theme of this year’s Shanghai Summer School will be “Chinese Urban and Architectural Culture: History and Future,” which engages diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary studies across the fields of urban, cultural, spatial, and ecological studies in the context of pressing challenges from urbanization process, intelligent technology and ecological crisis. The contemporary cities in China is always thought of as an incubator for new ideas and practices targeting a new habitat paradigm. Students in the summer school are encouraged to work with world-renowned practitioners and scholars, and explore the potential culture, technology and ecology for future humankind and all lives together.

This year’s Shanghai Summer School(Europe) includes two mandatory sessions and 1 workshop session.  The mandatory sessions focus on 1) authentic Chinese culture and 2 ) the urbanism of Shanghai. The workshop will guide the students to investigate 1) the urban regeneration practices of Shanghai, 2) the cutting edge computational technologies in design and urbanism, and 3) the shared habitat for mankind and nature. Each workshop will last for roughly a week and will be mentored by a group of experienced professors and tutors. Students will have the chances to observe the every day lives of urban neighborhoods, DIY digital installations, and explore the animal’s habitat in the neighboring city of Nanjing. All campers are required to participate in the workshops with their unique educational backgrounds and contributed to the final scholarship in different ways.
