Francesco Musco

Deputy Rector in Research, Professor

Francesco Musco is a distinguished professor of Urban Planning at Università Iuav di Venezia with a background in architecture. He earned his PhD in Analysis and Governance for Sustainable Development in 2007. Notably, he's been the Director of the Erasmus Mundus Master Course on Maritime Spatial Planning and the graduate degree in Planning and Policies for Cities. Between 2018-2021, he served as Deputy Rector for Research and is part of the board at CORILA Consortium. With teaching stints in universities from Louisville to Seville, Francesco champions a multidisciplinary approach to city and environmental planning, emphasizing sustainable urban regeneration. In 2011, he founded the Planning & Climate Change Lab, securing over 7 million euros in research grants. An author of 130+ publications, he also oversees the editorial series “Planning for Climate Proof Cities” by Springer Verlag and holds a UNESCO chair on heritage and urban regeneration.

Maria Chiara Tosi

Professor, Director, School of Doctorate Studies

Maria Chiara Tosi is a prominent figure in urbanism at Università Iuav di Venezia, where she not only teaches but also leads the doctoral school, coordinates the PhD in urbanism, and oversees the CityLab research cluster. Representing her institution at the Venice International University's academic council, her academic footprints extend to universities globally, including UC Berkeley, Columbia University, and Tongji University Shanghai. Besides her prolific teaching engagements, she's been an evaluator for notable foundations and currently sits on the Committee for National Scientific Qualification in Macrosector 08/F1. As a principal investigator, she has spearheaded national and international research projects across various programs. Maria's collaborations extend to Chinese universities, marking her involvement in the URBES research centre and the double master's degree partnership with CAUP-Tongji University. Showcasing her interdisciplinary prowess, she co-curated exhibitions at prestigious biennales in Shenzhen, Venice, and Shanghai. She contributes as an editorial board member for the Journal of Architecture and Urbanism and the e-Journal of Urban and Landscape Planning and holds the title of director at the IUAV PhD school.
