SHORT BIO

Professor Chen Chen is a Professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, and Vice Dean of the College. Professor Chen concurrently serves as Vice Chair of the Young Professionals Committee of the China Association of City Planning, Vice Chair of the Special Committee on New Urbanization and Urban–Rural Planning of the Chinese Society for Urban Studies, and Council Member of the Urban and Regional Planning Branch of the International Society for Natural Resources. Professor Chen’s research focuses on urban–rural integration and rural revitalization, industrial evolution and urban–rural regeneration, digital-intelligent diagnosis and planning intervention, and development Planning and governance in the Global South. Professor Chen has long been engaged in the Yangtze River Delta region, focusing on digital-intelligent diagnosis and design practice in rural space. He leads a team that conducts sustained, in-depth longitudinal rural surveys; independently develops rural development index reports based on multi-source big data; and, through a university–local government cooperation station network, carries out accompaniment-based tracking of the development dynamics of livable, workable, and beautiful rural areas. Through “industry–university–research collaborative innovation,” the team promotes the digital-intelligent transformation and development of the discipline. Professor Chen was selected as a CNKI Top 1% Highly Cited Scholar in 2024 and 2025 and a CNKI Highly Influential Scholar in 2024 and 2025. Research outputs have received the First Prize of the Jin Jingchang Award for Outstanding Papers in China’s Urban Planning, the First Prize in the China Young Planners Paper Competition, and selection as one of the “40 Outstanding Papers in 40 Years That Have Influenced China’s Urban and Rural Planning Process.” Additional recognitions include the Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Award, the Science and Technology Progress Award of the China Association of City Planning, the Exemplary Award of the International Society for Natural Resources, the Outstanding Case in Urban Renewal Practice of UN-Habitat, and multiple provincial/ministerial or higher awards for excellent urban and rural planning and design. A series of digital-intelligent teaching and industry–university–research outcomes have been selected by the Degree Center of the Ministry of Education as engineering cases, thematic cases, and typical cases of industry–academia collaborative education.
