Research Profile

  • LU Yongyi is an architectural historian. Based on the city of Shanghai her research focuses on history of Chinese modern architecture of early to middle 20th century. By tracing how the western modern architecture accepted, resisted and transformed, her research aims to reveal the complexity of the forming of Chinese modern and modernity in specific historical and cultural context. She also extended such research to the preservation of modern heritage, a critical perspective to Chinese contemporary architecture, and recently to the historiography of modern architecture. Her writings, ranging from historical overview to studies on specific themes, architects, buildings and educators, have appeared in a number of Chinese journals such as Time and Architecture, World Architecture, Architect and also in a few western architectural journals and English publications. Her teaching experience on history and theory of western architecture can be found in the widely-used text book History of Modern Architecture and the Perspectives on Architectural Theories. She is an editorial board member of RIBA’s Journal of Architecture (regional editor), Journal of Tongji University (Human Science edition) and the Architecture Heritage. She is also a committee member of Docomomo China. Her research has been supported by grants from the National Foundations.
