Research Profile

  • Dr. Luoxi Hao is a professor in lighting, executive deputy director of Built Environment Center in the College of Architecture & Urban Planning at Tongji University. She is the vice chairman of China Illuminating Engineering Society (CIES) and the director of Working Committee for International Exchanges of CIES. She is also the vice chairman of Shanghai Illuminating Engineering Society and the director of the Academic Working Committee. Professor Hao is mainly engaged in teaching and research in the field of light, colour, vision, as well as architectural and urban lighting design. As postdoctoral fellow, she finished the research on the Chinese light color preference (1999-2001) at Tsinghua University after she earned her Ph.D. (1998) degree from Tongji University.

  • Professor Hao has been the principal investigator of many national research programs, which include multiple National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects, the National High Technology Research and Development Program (“863” program) of China, the National Key Scientific and Technological Project, the National Science and Technology Support Program, and the Shanghai Expo Major Projects. Her research topics include health and biological effects of lighting in the Antarctic region, integrated applications of solid-state lighting in the 2010 Shanghai Expo Park, solid-state lighting in Beijing Olympic swimming pool (Water Cube), and many others. In the recently years, professor Hao’s research interests cover healthy luminous environment, the innovative applications of solid-state lighting, the relationship between spectral power distribution of lighting and human circadian effects, the health lighting installations in the Chinese Antarctic station, and the studies of emotional lighting in cardiac intensive care units. As a member of China’s 29th Antarctic expedition team and the person in charge of National research project The Application of LEDs in the Polar Station, she independently completed the experiments during three months at the Chinese Great Wall Antarctic Station. Considering the special conditions of polar day and night, the artificial lighting was designed to improve the sleeping environment, and adjust mood and psychology of the members of the Polar scientific expedition team. The design method of natural daylighting and artificial light environment in Polar Station area was proposed. As the project leader, Professor Luoxi Hao and her team completed the lighting master planning and design of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Park, the special lighting planning of construction and management in Shanghai Pudong New Area, lighting planning of Yingxiu Town in the Post-disaster Reconstruction of Wenchuan Earthquake, Hangzhou West Lake scenic lighting planning, Guilin urban lighting master planning, the lighting designs for Expo Culture Center, Hefei Grand Theater, Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower lighting transformation, Liu Haisu Art Museum and many other urban lighting planning, design, and interior lighting design projects. Besides, she published more than 100 papers in domestic and international journals and conferences, and published academic books “Urban Lighting Design”, “Light + Design: Practice and Discovery of Lighting Education”, “Lighting Master Planning and Design Research of China 2010 Shanghai World Expo Park”, “Expo Light – the Reading Notes of Lighting in China 2010 Shanghai World Expo Park”, and also a book which truly records the work and life of the 29th Antarctic expedition – “Antarctic Memory”. She got the National Outstanding Scientific and Technological Worker Award in 2011.
