Back to Fundamentals [2]

Performances objectives in structural design

图片

This second lecture of a series of three will address performances objectives in structural design and provide examples of design-oriented approaches using VGS.The lecture start by introducing the two theorems of plastic calculation, showing their interest for structural design. In application, the use of strut-and-tie modelling will be introduced, as well as the use of graphic statics for their design and analysis, this approach being suitable to all structural materials. This lecture will then discuss the notion of optimum for STM and reticulated systems, and its methodological implications for structural design.

From an introduction of vectorial and polyhedral 3D graphic statics, the talk will then address the use of VGS for the design of optimised systems. The theoretical bases of vector-based graphic statics will be presented as well as its computational implementation resulting in the VGS plugin for grasshopper. A few case studies will finally be presented to show applications of the vectorial approach.

The 'Back to fundamentals' series, as part of the online series of lectures 'Performance based Digital Design Theory' of the Tongji University 2023, addresses the topic of applied structural design, particularly through 3D statics with VGS, by returning to fundamentals of structural design.

Denis Zastavni

UCLouvain

Denis Zastavni is Dr. Engineer Architect and Professor in the Louvain research institute for Landscape, Architecture, Built environment [LAB] and at the Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urbanism [LOCI] of the UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. He has first worked as a structural engineer and architect for over a decade. His PhD was on Robert Maillart’s design methods and won the Premio Edoardo Benvenuto in 2008. His main publications are on structural design, pedagogical approaches in teaching structure, and Robert Maillart’s designs. With his team, his current research is focused on structural design approaches and tools, analysis of historical structures, history of the design of structures, graphic statics, timber constructions and on deepening his knowledge of Robert Maillart’s structural methods.

Jean-Philippe Jasienski

UCLouvain

Jean-Philippe Jasienski graduated in Architectural Engineering from the UCLouvain (Belgium) in 2012 and studied at the Universidad del Bío-Bío in Concepción (Chile) during his master. He currently works part-time at the LOCI faculty from UCLouvain as a research and teaching assistant and guest lecturer. He is developing a PhD in the Structure & Technologies research unit (part of the Louvain research institute for Landscape, Architecture, Built environment [LAB]) since 2012 with Prof. D. Zastavni (UCL), L. Ney (Ney & Partners) and C. Fivet (EPFL). In 2017 he was guest researcher at ETH Zurich in the Structural Design research group led by Prof. J. Schwartz. His research examines the properties of vector-based 3-D graphic statics for both structural design and analysis. Besides, he is a partner at MATADOR, a Brussels-based architecture office focusing mainly on public buildings.
