Sino-UK Seminar Explores Frontier of Rural Planning and Spatial Governance

The 2026 Sino-UK Symposium on Rural Planning and Spatial Governance was successfully held at Wenyuan Building, Tongji University, from June 20 to 21. Hosted by the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University and co-organized by multiple authoritative institutions, the event was initiated by Professor Zhang Shangwu and led by Professor Chen Chen of Tongji University, with support from the National High-End Foreign Expert Introduction Program.
The two-day seminar gathered six top scholars from world-renowned British universities and over ten domestic experts. Centering on rural planning, spatial governance and community development, the event launched in-depth cross-cultural academic dialogues with 20 keynote speeches.
In the opening speeches, academician Wu Zhiqiang highlighted Britain’s century-old experience in rural spatial governance for China’s reference, while Professor Zhang Shangwu emphasized that rural areas are core carriers of ecological security and cultural identity rather than marginal urban spaces. Notably, Professor Chen Chen’s team released the bilingual Yangtze River Delta Rural New Business Vitality Index Report, conducting a full-scale digital assessment of local rural development and identifying youth and family-oriented rural consumption trends.
Participants conducted in-depth discussions on rural ecological planning, community revitalization and multi-governance innovation. The seminar finalized future cooperation focusing on rural challenges in metropolitan areas, building a solid foundation for long-term Sino-UK academic exchanges and global rural sustainable development.
