Release time:2026-06-29
On June 27, 2026, a donation ceremony of traditional Chinese woodworking tools was held at the Exhibition Hall on the first floor of Building D, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP), Tongji University. Presided over by Professor Li Zhenyu from CAUP, the event witnessed a valuable donation from Professor Zhong Dekun, a senior professor and former dean of the School of Architecture, Southeast University.
As part of Professor Zhong’s plan to donate traditional woodworking tools to six domestic architecture universities, the donation includes 108 well-preserved tools covering planes, chisels, saws, rulers and drills. Featuring classic styles and integrating northern and southern Chinese craftsmanship, these items fully embody the wisdom and ingenuity of traditional Chinese wooden construction.
Professor Zhong stated that he launched the donation out of deep concern that modern students and workers are increasingly unfamiliar with traditional construction techniques. He hopes to pass down traditional craftsmanship and passion for architecture to younger generations via these physical tools.
Deans, scholars and architecture experts from nationwide architecture universities attended the ceremony. University officials noted that the tools will be applied fully in architecture teaching, practical training and academic research, helping students intuitively understand traditional wooden structure logic and cultural connotations. The donation bridges traditional construction heritage and modern architectural education, inspiring reflections on human subjectivity and tool value in the AI era.
