College of architecture and urban planning, Tongji University has secured its first-ever RIBA International Excellence Award in 2026. The honor goes to Green Hill, a landmark industrial heritage renewal project on Shanghai’s Yangpu Riverside, designed by Professor Zhang Ming, head of the Landscape Architecture Department of Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
Established in 2015 and held biennially, the RIBA International Awards are globally authoritative architecture honors. The 2026 edition selected 34 outstanding projects worldwide, focusing on urban renewal, ecological resilience and social welfare.
Originally a 1995 tobacco machinery warehouse slated for demolition, the building was innovatively reconstructed with layered terraces and a penetrating urban passage, connecting the city hinterland with the Huangpu River waterfront. Adopting vertical greening, rainwater recycling and other eco-friendly technologies, the multi-functional public space now receives over one million visitors annually, delivering remarkable social and ecological value.
