On the afternoon of May 22, 2026, Professor Wilfried Wang (Wang Huiping) from Tongji University received the First-Class Cross of Honour for Science and Art, one of Austria’s highest federal distinctions for achievements in science and the arts. The award ceremony took place in the former cashier hall of the Imperial-Royal State Bank, a landmark designed by pioneering modern architect Otto Wagner.
The accolade was presented with an address delivered by distinguished Austrian architect Professor Hermann Czech. Established in 1955, this prestigious honour has been conferred upon many leading architects and scholars worldwide, including Hans Hollein and Seung H-Sang.
Professor Czech spoke highly of Professor Wang’s lifelong dedication to researching and promoting Austrian architecture. Professor Wang introduced theories by Hermann Czech, Josef Frank and Otto Wagner to global audiences via 9H journal, and co-curated a notable exhibition on Adolf Loos with Yehuda Safran. He also actively advocated for the preservation of Vienna’s medieval inner city, contributing greatly to its UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
Doris Wolfslehner, senior official of Austria’s Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, Media and Sport, attended the ceremony alongside Professor Wang.
