Brief Introduction

In this lecture, Prof. Ben Derudder will review the narratives surrounding the discourse that the world is urbanizing. Although this is clearly the case, emphasizing the 'urban age risks losing sight of the multiple drivers, geographies, and realities of urbanization. Analytically, this is achieved by reviewing major urban definitions. Empirically, this is achieved by reviewing major patterns of urbanization. And conceptually, this is achieved by reviewing the main perspectives on how to compare urban experiences.
