Emerging Planetarism
DigitalFUTURES 2023
Emerging Planetarism
Over the past 12 years, DigitalFUTURES has brought together architects and instructors from around the world to offer a series of lectures and workshops, growing substantially into a shared global platform accessible to scholars, architects, and students worldwide. This year, DigitalFUTURES 2023, with the theme Emerging Planetarism, will further explore the technological emergence within the global view, focusing on the intersection of digital technology and the built environment, unfolding the potential of digital technology to transform the way we approach globalization.
In the context of the emerging digital infrastructure across the globe, the built environment can only be seen as a holistic entity, as part of a larger interconnected system that includes energy grids, information networks, and material systems, all embedded in natural ecosystems. Meanwhile, with advanced digital tools, such as artificial intelligence and robotics, the built environment could be designed, optimized and constructed for energy efficiency, user inhabitability, and resource sustainability, while minimizing their impact on the natural environment. This epistemological shift is essential to address the challenges of the 21st century, including climate change, resource depletion, and population growth. Under the theme Emerging Planetarism, DigitalFUTURES 2023 will organize a series of workshops, lectures, international conferences, and exhibitions. Through the exchange of ideas and insights, we hope to inspire a new generation of architects and designers to embrace the vision of the planetarism and to shape the future of our planet.
The DigitalFUTURES 2023 summer workshops will take place both online and in person at Tongji University from 24 June to 01 July. We will also be featuring the Doctoral Consortium (17-22 June), a free lecture series for doctoral students, and the 5th CDRF international conference (24 June).
