Program introduction The Urban Planning and Design program at Tongji University was established in 1952. It gained the authority to confer master's and doctoral degrees in 1981 and became one of China's first postdoctoral research stations in 1988. Officially recognized by the National Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, the program is designated as a key discipline at both the national and municipal levels. In 2011, Tongji University was among the top 11 institutions in China authorized to grant the professional Master of Urban Planning degree and began enrolling students for this program in 2012. Smart-Digital Urban Planning focuses on urban spaces, addressing the developmental needs of digital cities and the intelligent demands of planning governance. Through data-driven approaches, data mining, and intelligent algorithm optimization, it aims to achieve efficient utilization, rational allocation, dynamic management, and sustainable development of urban spatial resources. The Master Degree in Smart-Digital Urban Planning is built upon Tongji University’s first-class discipline of Urban and Rural Planning, intersecting with artificial intelligence, informatics, remote sensing, and management science. It is an emerging program that integrates theory and practice. This training program aims to cultivate high-level professionals with interdisciplinary expertise, a solid foundation in urban planning theory, and proficiency in AI methods and technologies. Graduates will possess innovative and practical capabilities in smart-digital urban planning, preparing them to tackle complex urban challenges with data-driven intelligence. · Language: 80 or above for TOEFL, or 6.0 or above for IELTS, or other certificates which can prove that English is your native language or the working language.
· College educational background or equivalent, and major in Architecture or related majors.
· Degree certification and academic transcripts. If the documents are not in Chinese or English, the original notarized translated versions must be submitted.
· A letter of motivation (reasons for applying this program, no less than 800 words).
· Recommendation letters by two associate professors or professionals of associate professor level, including one of recommendation letter from the master supervisor who intend to apply for.
In addition to the above application materials, the university may require an applicant to provide supplementary materials, depending on specific requirements.
Duration
Duration for full-time study is 2.5 years, and the maximum duration of the study is 4 years.
Credit requirements
Each master student should complete at least 35 credits, of which no less than 5 credits for public degree courses, no less than 11 credits for professional degree courses, no less than 8 credits for non-degree courses (This requirement is subject to the latest training plan).
Thesis requirements: Each student must complete their thesis or application for degree practice results proposal before the end of the course education, complete the thesis writing or practice results according to the requirements of the Ministry of Education of China, and pass the defense.
Degree to be awarded
The student who has fulfilled all the course and thesis requirements will be awarded the master’s degree in Smart-Digital Urban Planning.
