2026丨The 11th International Young Scholar Forum of Tongji University
Frontiers in Architecture,
Urban and Rural Planning,
Landscape Architecture &
Building Technology Science
Introduction of CAUP
The College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University has a long-standing history and a solid academic foundation. It currently consists of three departments: Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Building Technology Science. The college offers six undergraduate programs in Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, Historic Building Preservation Engineering, Urban Design, and Built Environment and Energy Application Engineering. It also has doctoral and master’s degree programs in Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture and Heat, Gas Supply, Ventilating and Air Conditioning Engineering, supported by postdoctoral research stations in the first three first-level disciplines.
With a complete academic structure and comprehensive program offerings, the college ranks as one of the largest in terms of undergraduate and graduate enrollment among similar institutions worldwide. All three first-level disciplines—Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture—are included in China’s list of “Double First-Class” construction disciplines. Urban and Rural Planning (including Architecture and Landscape Architecture) is designated as a Shanghai Peak Discipline, while Architecture (including Urban and Rural Planning and Landscape Architecture) is recognized as a Shanghai Key Discipline. In the fifth round of national discipline evaluations, Urban and Rural Planning received an A+ rating, while Architecture and Landscape Architecture were rated A. In the 2025 QS rankings, Tongji University’s Architecture and Built Environment (including Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, and Landscape Architecture) was ranked 11th globally.
The college publishes ten academically influential journals, including three Chinese-language journals—Urban Planning Forum, Time+Architecture, and Architectural Heritage—and six English-language journals: Built Heritage, Architecture Asia, Architecture China, Frontiers of Urban and Rural Planning, Architectural Intelligence, and Perspectives in Architecture and Urbanism. It also co-publishes the Chinese journal Landscape Architecture.
Through initiatives such as international construction festivals, joint design studios, overseas study programs, international dual-degree education, international summer schools, an international doctoral school, global forums, and collaborative research projects, the college has established a distinctive global influence.
Introduction of the Forum
The 11th International Young Scholar Forum of Tongji University (Frontiers in Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Building Technology Science) aims to advance the university’s talent-strengthening strategy, optimize its talent ecosystem, and foster, attract, and effectively utilize outstanding talent. By intensifying efforts to recruit talent globally, the forum seeks to enhance the understanding of Tongji University among international scholars, particularly in the fields of Architecture, Urban and Rural Planning, Landscape Architecture, and Heat, Gas Supply, Ventilating and Air Conditioning Engineering and other relevant fields (e.g. Philosophy, Physics, Computer Science and Technology, Economics, Environmental Science and Engineering).
This forum provides an academic exchange platform for exceptional young scholars who have achieved notable accomplishments overseas. Through keynote presentations, academic discussions, and talent negotiation sessions, it facilitates dialogue on cutting-edge topics and emerging trends in global scientific and research domains. The forum aims to inspire outstanding young scholars to return to or come to China to pursue innovative research in their chosen fields, fostering rapid career growth and cultivating a cohort of academic leaders poised to make significant contributions to the nation’s development as a global scientific powerhouse.
We warmly invite PhD graduates and postdoctoral researchers in the following research areas to actively participate, engage in discussions on academic frontiers and hotspots, and contribute to shaping the future of these disciplines:
Architecture: Digital and Intelligent Design, Urban Renewal and Heritage Conservation, Green Architecture and Eco-Cities, History, Theory, and Criticism, Architectural Acoustics.
Urban and Rural Planning: AI for Urban Planning, Urban and Rural History and Heritage Conservation, Urban and Rural Infrastructure and Resilience, Community and Housing Development, Urban Renewal and Planning Design, Healthy City Science and Planning, Green and Low-Carbon Transportation Planning, Planning Policies and Urban-Rural Governance.
