In active response to China's dual carbon strategy and the development concept of green growth, Tongji University restructured its Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) discipline, originally under the School of Mechanical Engineering, and integrated it into the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP). This move led to the formal establishment of the Department of Building Technology Science, marking a significant new phase in the college's disciplinary development.
The HVAC discipline at Tongji University boasts a long and illustrious history. In 1948, the university president invited the technical director of shanghai international hotel to establish the Equipment Teaching and Research Section, initiating the discipline's development. Over the years, it has nurtured numerous outstanding talents, including prominent scientists and renowned educators in the field. The discipline has made remarkable contributions to the environmental control design and optimization of many major national projects, as well as to key technological breakthroughs in special artificial environments, establishing itself as one of the leaders among China's top institutions in this field.

The development of building technology at CAUP has undergone three stages. It started with Building Construction, expanded into Architectural Acoustics and Optics, and then advanced into new fields such as Energy-saving and Low-carbon, Digital Fabrication, Heritage conservation technologies. Early contributors laid a solid foundation in these areas. After the reform and opening, the college actively made strategic arrangements in green energy conservation and other areas. In the new century, it proposed four major development directions, including ecological cities, green buildings, digital design, and heritage conservation, successfully achieving fruitful results.
This disciplinary restructuring underwent multiple rounds of discussions and demonstrations, incorporating opinions from various stakeholders to form a scientific and forward-looking integration plan. The newly established Department of Building Technology Science will focus on cutting-edge areas such as sustainable building environments and energy systems. It aims to build a new disciplinary ecosystem, cultivate top-notch innovative talents, and train professionals capable of leading the future development of architectural technology.
