On October 8, 2025, the China-Spain architectural exchange exhibition REGENERACIONES: CHINA Y ESPAÑA EN EL ESPEJO, jointly planned by Tongji University and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with Vice President Li Xiangning as one of the chief curators, opened at La Casa de la Arquitectura in Madrid.
High-profile figures including Spanish Minister Elma Saiz, Secretary-General Iñaqui Carnicero, Chinese Ambassador to Spain Yao Jing, and curators Li Xiangning and Manuel Blanco attended. Pritzker Prize winners Rafael Moneo, Wang Shu, and Carme Pigem, along with other renowned architects, also witnessed the opening.
The exhibition, supported by the Spanish government, stems from the 2024 visit of Spanish Prime Minister Sánchez to Tongji University. It showcases 35 top Chinese and Spanish architects' groundbreaking practices in urban construction, heritage regeneration, and community activation. It explores how architects from both countries, in vastly different contexts, tackle the urgent task of reusing, reinterpreting, and transforming existing urban and architectural heritage to optimize resources, reduce environmental impact, and meet social needs.
At the opening ceremony, Iñaqui Carnicero and Yao Jing delivered speeches, praising the deepening cooperation. The curators shared the exhibition's planning process. Architect representatives introduced their works and expressed gratitude for the platform.
An academic forum followed on the 9th, with architects engaging in in-depth discussions on three themes. The exhibition runs from October 8, 2025, to April 30, 2026, with an online version available for global audiences.
