Release time:2025-07-14

On July 6, 2025, the Design with Nature Now International Landscape Master Forum was successfully held at the Minghua Sugar Warehouse in Yangpu Binjiang, Shanghai. The forum, co-hosted by Tongji University, the Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Shanghai Yangpu Binjiang Investment Development (Group) Co., Ltd., brought together 3 hosts and 9 distinguished speakers from around the world. Over 300 attendees from 10 countries, including scholars, designers, government officials, and students, engaged in in-depth discussions on cutting-edge topics in landscape research, practice, education, and management.

The forum featured three keynote sessions and a special exhibition observer report. Catherine Seavitt from the University of Pennsylvania emphasized the need for landscape designers to adopt both an astronaut's macro perspective and a naturalist's micro sensitivity. Zhu Xiangming, a national engineering survey and design master, explored the wisdom of Chinese classical gardens rooted in nature, highlighting their relevance in contemporary design. Li Cundong, another master in the field, discussed the importance of regional landscapes in balancing human and natural relationships.

Other highlights included Tom Leader's call to preserve local cultural memories in urban design, Wang Xiangrong's exploration of urban water systems, and Jon Hazelwood's advocacy for nature-based solutions in climate resilience. Zhang Bo provided a critical analysis of Ian McHarg's aesthetic philosophy, while Zhu Yufan and Zhang Ming offered insights into integrating natural and cultural contexts in design.

The forum served as a high-level platform for international academic dialogue, reaffirming the crucial role of design in fostering harmony between humans and nature and advancing sustainable development.
