Release time:2025-06-24

Jenchieh Hung, visiting professor at Tongji University, has collaborated with Yanzhe Hu, vice chair of the Department of Architecture at Tongji University, on a student design project that has recently received significant recognition. The project, Shanghai Bund Memorial Museum, designed by student Kai Wen, has been shortlisted for the prestigious INDE. Awards 2025 in Australia, under the Graduate category. Notably, Kai Wen is the only entry from China on the award shortlist, standing alongside entries from Aotearoa / New Zealand, Australia, and Thailand.

The Shanghai Bund Memorial Museum reinterprets traditional lane-house courtyards through a site-specific design that blends cultural memory with urban functionality. Vertically, open-air courtyards channel natural elements—light, wind, and rain—to create a contemplative, ritual-like atmosphere, while horizontally, a sloped rooftop connects to the Bund promenade, offering public space and river views. The extended roofline responds to the historic architecture of the Bund, establishing a distinctive and contextually sensitive addition to Shanghai’s skyline. The project was designed by Kai Wen, an exchange student from South China University of Technology’s School of Architecture, who studied under visiting professor Jenchieh Hung at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP), Tongji University.

Since 2019, Jenchieh Hung, a renowned architect and co-founder of HAS Design and Research, has led the Hung And Songkittipakdee Laboratory (HAS Lab) at Tongji University, alongside Kulthida Songkittipakdee, also a visiting professor at Tongji University. Both professors have brought their practical design experience into the academic realm, mentoring students and leading Tongji University’s participation in high-profile international exhibitions. One notable example includes their co-curation of a student exhibition, Invisible Sensibility—Futurity of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, held in conjunction with the solo exhibition of acclaimed Japanese architect Tadao Ando in Shanghai. In 2025, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at Tongji University is ranked 11th globally in the QS World University Rankings for Architecture and Built Environment, underscoring its growing influence in architectural education and research.
