Shanghai, June 8, 2025, Under a light drizzle that added a touch of cosmic ambiance, the 2025 Tongji University International Construction Festival concluded yesterday with a showcase of futuristic creativity, as 35 teams from 29 Chinese universities and 6 international architecture schools transformed plastic hollow boards into visionary Interstellar Arks during an intense 8-hour on-site build.
Now in its 17th year, the festival—a flagship event at Tongji’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning—has cemented its reputation as a global stage for architectural innovation. The festival’s focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and sustainable design aligns with global trends in urban planning and space exploration, positioning Tongji as a leader in nurturing the architects of tomorrow. This year’s competition, dubbed the Fengyuzhu Plastic Hollow Board Architectural Design and Construction Challenge, drew first-year architecture students from Asia, Europe, and the Americas, all tasked with reimagining habitable space for interstellar travel.
After rigorous jury deliberation, 3 teams clinched first-place honors, 6 secured second, and 9 earned third-place recognition. The winning designs represent more than just architectural models—they’re blueprints for humanity’s next frontier, the arks will now advance to real-world applications: selected projects will be considered for Shanghai’s Quantum City Spatiotemporal Intelligence Innovation Construction Plan and the Fengxian Future Science Fiction Museum Project, with potential construction sites at Fuxing Island and the Shui Zai Yi Fang Science Fiction Museum.
