On May 22nd, Lucas Lima, the Deputy Consul General of the Brazilian Consulate General in Shanghai, along with a delegation including specialists from the Science, Technology and Innovation Section, paid a visit to the College of Architecture and Urban Planning. They were received by Philip F. Yuan, the Associate Dean of the college; Zhang Peng, Associate Dean; Tian Weijia, the Research Coordinator; and Yu Yunlong, a postdoctoral researcher.
The delegation first toured several cutting-edge laboratories within the college. These included the Experimental Center for Historic Building Conservation, the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Artistic Research & Creation, the National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Architecture, Planning, and Landscape, the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Architecture, Planning, and Landscape, and the Experimental Center for Digital Design and Robotic Construction. During the tour, representatives from the college provided the delegation with a detailed introduction to the achievements of cooperation with Brazilian universities. This encompassed breakthroughs in academic and scientific research, the unique characteristics of disciplinary setups, and the experiences accumulated through international collaborations.
After the tour, the college delegation and the visiting representatives moved to Yifu Building for a meeting and exchange with the university's Foreign Affairs Office. Li Xiangning, the Vice President; Yin Wen, the Director of the Foreign Affairs Office; and the Brazilian delegation engaged in in-depth discussions on crucial topics such as scientific research and innovation cooperation. Both sides unanimously agreed that China and Brazil enjoy vast cooperation opportunities and significant development potential in the field of architecture. In the future, the two parties will further deepen exchanges and cooperation through various means, including faculty and student exchanges, academic forums, and joint exhibitions. They aim to expand the breadth and depth of scientific research and educational collaborations, with a particular focus on tapping into and exploring the cooperation potential in the architectural field, working hand in hand to promote the common prosperity of architectural culture and academia between China and Brazil.
College's Cooperation with Brazil
Since 2023, the college has been actively promoting cooperation with Brazilian universities. That year, the college officially signed a framework cooperation agreement with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, laying a solid foundation for in-depth cooperation in academics, scientific research, and other areas. In April of the same year, the Architectural Dialogues: China and Brazil exhibition was inaugurated at the college. The exhibition meticulously showcased 14 works by 3 Brazilian architects and 17 works by 17 Chinese architects, fully displaying the unique charm of architectural cultures in both China and Brazil. This batch of historically significant works brought by Brazilian architects has been permanently preserved at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, becoming an eternal testimony to the architectural and cultural exchanges between China and Brazil. Additionally, the college maintains a close and positive relationship with the University of São Paulo in Brazil, with both sides actively engaging in mutual visits and exchange activities.
