We do not need any more buildings. Instead, we need to reuse and reimagine the built environment we have inherited in such a manner that it is more open and accessible. The only truly sustainable architecture is an unbuilding. The only just architecture is one that is open. The only beautiful architecture is one that shows us what is already there. We need to uncover and heighten the past to help us understand where we are, where we have come from, and where we are going. If we cannot reuse buildings, we should reuse spaces or materials, or build in a purely temporary manner. This lecture will show beautiful examples of such imaginative reuse.
