From May 13 to 14, 2025, Dean Wang Lan, College of Architecture and Urban Planning (CAUP) led a delegation to McGill University in Canada, building on the momentum from McGill President Deep Saini's visit to Tongji in March. The trip aimed to further strengthen educational and research ties between the two institutions.
During their stay, the delegation held extensive discussions with Viviane Yargeau, Dean of McGill's Faculty of Engineering, David Theodore, Dean of the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture, and faculty members. They reflected on past collaborations, including the Tongji International Construction Festival and student exchanges, and acknowledged the pivotal role of Professor Peter Guo-hua Fu, an outstanding alumnus, in fostering these connections. The talks focused on enhancing research collaborations, curriculum development, and institutional growth, with both sides recognizing the potential for resource sharing and mutual benefits to reinvigorate architectural education. Zhang Peng, CAUP's Associate Dean, and Wang Zijing from the International Cooperation Office joined the discussions.
Beyond the meetings, the delegation explored McGill's academic environment. On May 13, they toured the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture's facilities, marveling at student design projects that highlighted McGill's innovative architectural education.
The following day, they ventured around McGill's campus and visited the Moshe Safdie Archives, learning about the renowned architect's design philosophy and iconic works, such as Montreal's Habitat 67, celebrated for its unique style and social insight.
The delegation also visited the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), a leading museum and research hub. They perused its extensive collection of architectural books, drawings, photographs, manuscripts, and models, including the Rare Book Library, Image Archives, and Film Archives, and discussed potential collaborations in academic research and archive sharing.
This visit deepened academic exchanges and understanding between Tongji's CAUP and McGill's engineering and architecture schools, paving the way for future research and educational collaborations. Both sides are eager to continue working together, guided by principles of openness and mutual benefit, to expand cooperation and drive innovation in architectural education across China and Canada.
