As the paradise on earth, Suzhou's consistent urban structure and chessboard water-city planning have made it an internationally renowned city. Considering the region's geographical features, the lecture will discuss Suzhou's historic areas in a large-scale spatial context. These distinctive geospatial features have shaped Suzhou's settlement. Moreover, the urbanization process has significantly altered the spatial features of the Jiangnan region. The prosperous Suzhou, as a vital hub along the Grand Canal, has been shaped by its vibrant commerce, rich craft tradition, multiple Buddhist temples, elaborated art, and entertainment, all of which are featured in the gardens of Suzhou. These private gardens, which have been well preserved until now, have become the spatial prototype and inspiration for contemporary architectural design practice.
