Tongji Planning Showcases at Urban Expo of the 12th World Urban Forum

The 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12) was held at the Egypt International Exhibition Center in Cairo, Egypt, from November 4 to 8, 2024. The Urban Expo, an integral part of WUF12, commenced on the morning of November 4, providing a platform for UN members and regions to share knowledge, enhance capabilities, establish connections, and explore solutions to urban challenges.

The Urban Expo is divided into five major exhibition zones: Country and city pavilions, UN and International Organization stands, Academic stands, Civil Society stands, and Private sector stands. The Urban Planning Society of China's stand, themed 'Planning Values for Cities with Adequate Homes and Public Spaces,' highlighted planning's role in sustainable housing, slum upgrading, spatial efficiency, smart cities, climate resilience, and enhancing public spaces. The exhibition introduced the overview of planning in China through videos, presenting the society's history, structure, activities, and publications. The Shanghai Tongji Urban Planning and Design Institute, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University (CAUP), and other renowned domestic planning institutions presented their development progress, excellent planning and design achievements, demonstrating their achievements and strength in the field of planning. 

Wu Zhiqiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wu Jiang, Former Executive Vice president of Tongji University, Assistant Professor Yin Jie, Assistant Professor Huang Huangand assistant research fellow Yang Ting from CAUP attended the Urban Expo. The Tongji delegation, representing the institution at WUF12, actively participated in various side events and seminars, contributing the Tongji Voice to discussions on urban sustainability. This involvement highlighted Tongji's academic strength in urban planning and sustainable development, offering Chinese wisdom and solutions to global urban issues.

 

During the same period, the World Urban Planning Education Network (WUPEN), an international education federation composed of excellent planning institutions in the world founded by Prof, Wu Zhiqiang from CAUP, attended the forum and participated in multiple events, emphasizing its role in global urban planning education and knowledge sharing. WUPEN also had a presence at the Urban Expo, presenting recent research findings and educational materials, and engaging participants with avant-garde educational philosophies and progressive planning instruments.

The journal Frontiers of Urban and Rural Planning (FURP), hosted by Tongji University, at the same booth with WUPEN, promoting and introducing the journal to WUF12 participants. As an authoritative journal in the field of urban planning in China, FURP's presence on the international stage helps to enhance China's international influence in urban planning.

In addition, WUPEN, FURP, the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) co-orgnized the Urban Research and Education for Smart Futures networking event on November 7. The event focused on the application of emerging technologies in urban research and education, and explored digital platforms and tools for data collection, analysis, and knowledge dissemination in the context of smart societies and sustainable development. The event featured distinguished speakers such as Academician Wu Zhiqiang from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Global Planning Education Association Network Co-Chair Paulo Silva, who shared their expert perspectives on cutting-edge trends in urban research and education.
