Although the architectural form of the Han Buddhist and the Cistercian Monasteries seem differently, they share many similarities in the internal institutional model of monks’ lives and the corresponding architectural core value. Based on the relationship between monks' lives and Monastic spaces, this lecture investigates the unique Space–Time Pattern formed by the monks through their thousand-year spatial practice. Furthermore, it explores the constant core of architectural space based on the deconstruction of such Space–Time Pattern, proposing a new architectural design method based upon “modular of spirit” and “patch in time and space”.
