The 2024 Tongji University International Construction Festival, along with the Fengyu Zhu Plastic Hollow Panel Architecture Design and Construction Activity, successfully concluded on June 8-9, 2024, during the bright summer days of the Dragon Boat Festival and the national college entrance examination.

The participating teams included 12 freshman representatives from Tongji University CAUP and School of Design and Innovation, 17 freshman teams from domestic architectural colleges, and seven teams from architectural institutions across the Americas, Europe, and Asia. A total of 260 faculty and students collaborated to design and construct 36 plastic hollow panel buildings.

The Tongji University International Construction Festival was selected as a special outreach program by the Architectural Society of China in 2024, receiving guidance and support from the esteemed organization.

Part1 Design Theme

雨到中霄寂不鸣,

只闻风拂树梢轻。

瓦沟收拾残零水,

并作檐间一滴声。

——【宋】杨万里

Inspired by the Song Dynasty poem by Yang Wanli, the design theme emphasized incorporating auditory experiences into the spatial design. Participants were tasked with creating a specific urban-rural context for their constructions, showcasing their ability to translate complex spatial concepts and a profound understanding of architectural acoustics and place-making. This event highlighted the diverse thinking and behavioral patterns in architectural education, as well as a deeper appreciation for humanistic values.

Part2 Final Winners

The Listening to the Voices plastic hollow panel architecture design and construction competition has announced its winners:

First Prize went to South China University of Technology, Tianjin University, and the University of Dundee (UK) for their innovative designs that exhibit adaptability and sustainability.

South China University of Technology

Boasting impeccable implementability and a unique ability to adapt to diverse environments, the design from South China University of Technology employs a foldable, origami-inspired structure. The varying degrees of its opening and closing mechanisms profoundly influence the spatial experience and acoustic perception within the building, allowing for the selection of distinct sonic environments. Catering to the theme of urban-rural integration, this structure folds into a compact volume resembling a tent, facilitating transportation to diverse locales, ready to tackle varying external conditions and climates.

Tianjin University

Tianjin University's design utilizes a modular approach, employing arched structures that ensure stability, durability, and aesthetic appeal. The building's plan and spatial configuration are composed of modular units, allowing for assembly and expansion in a prefabricated manner, seamlessly adapting to a range of urban and rural spaces. Furthermore, the design incorporates an innovative ceiling element that captures and amplifies the sound of rain, integrating the acoustic experience seamlessly into the overall spatial narrative. This modular spatial configuration also ensures adaptability to diverse environments.

University of Dundee

The University of Dundee's design is both visually captivating and environmentally sensitive, seamlessly integrating material properties with structural design, eliminating waste and demonstrating sustainability. In terms of acoustics, the work uniquely reflects on the implications of deforestation, sparking profound reflections on the relationship between humans and nature. The building's facade evokes the urban landscape and modernity, resembling a concrete interface, while its interior, resembling a wooden interface, conjures images of rural tranquility and nature. This duality of urban and rural, nature and human modernization, imbues the work with educational and societal significance.
