Release time:2024-03-14

M. Hank Haeusler, Professor of the School of Built Environment, University of New South Wales, Australia, Director of ARC Centre for Digital Construction of New Age Buildings visited CAUP On March 11, 2024.

Dean WANG Lan, Vice Dean Phillip YUAN, Director of International Cooperation Department LIU Kan, Head of International Relation of Architecture Department TAN Zheng, and Administrative Director of International Cooperation Department LI Wei attended the welcome meeting.

Both parties have reached a preliminary intention of cooperation and exchanged views on joint research in the direction of Computational Design at the undergraduate level. Furthermore, UNSW doctoral graduates were warmly invited to carry out post-doctoral research in Tongji to deepen the academic exchanges and cooperation between Tongji and UNSW.

After the meeting, M. Hank Haeusler gave a lecture entitled Digital Sustainability Thinking for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing, which is one of the lectures in the series of 2024 Architectural DigitalFUTURES Lecture.

Lecture introduction:

The built environment sector is under increasing pressure to operate in sustainable ways, pursuing profitability while contributing to its wider ecosystem through economic, social, and environmental goals. To meet net-zero goals by 2050 we need to decarbonisation the construction process through minimised emissions, waste generation, and building with less materials for more humans. This lecture will present the thinking and upcoming work of the ARC Centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing which deploys digital sustainability as a ‘twin transformation / twin transition’ with an intersection in which digitalization strengthen sustainability. It will unpack how we will investigate digital sustainability through our 25 PhD students to enhance productivity and efficiency sustainably in the AEC sector, with the primary objective of bridging gaps in knowledge and practice through three interconnected architectural research and training themes – Synthesis, Management and Analytics.
