Speaker

Fernando Diniz Moreira

Fernando Diniz Moreira is an Architect (UFPE, Brazil, 1990) and historian (Catholic University of Pernambuco, 1991) with a Ph.D. in Architecture (University of Pennsylvania, 2004). He is a Full Professor at the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE) in Brazil. He has published and lectured on theory, history and conservation of modern architecture and urbanism.

This lecture discusses the relationship between landscape and modern architecture, taking into consideration Le Corbusier’s impressions of South American landscape from his 1929 trip, which had a meaningful impact on his way of understanding land- scape and conceiving his own architecture and urbanism. Through the study of his drawings and writings, we focus on the impact caused by the experience of seeing the territory from above; the poetic meeting with Rio de Janeiro, which determined the formulation of his plan for that city; and the strengthening of his utopian view of the world.
