Outline:

Climate change is the defining issue of our time. This presentation will discuss, through the presenter’s research, teaching and practice, how it is possible to reduce our impact on climate change. The presentation includes applied research in smart passive cooling systems at the University of California Los Angeles and at Cal Poly Pomona; hands-on architectural education through the construction and evaluation of low cost sustainable buildings in California and Mexico; and practice implementing building science and performance simulation in projects in all continents at CallisonRTKL.

Prof. Dr.Pablo La Roche

Pablo La Roche is Associate Vice President, Sustainable DesignLeader at CallisonRTKL and Professor of Architecture at California StatePolytechnic University. Dr. La Roche has more than 25 years of experience inprofessional practice, designing and implementing sustainable, low carbonstrategies in award winning projects all over the world.

La Roche has a PhD from the University of California Los Angelesand his research interests include passive cooling systems, green roofs,low-energy, and low carbon architecture, publishing more than 130 papers onthese topics, including his book Carbon Neutral Architectural Design with asecond edition published in 2017. In 2013 he co-chaired the BESS SB13conference in Cal Poly Pomona California and in 2016 he chaired the Passive LowEnergy Architecture PLEA conference in Los Angeles. He is a member of theInternational Advisory board of PLEA 2017 and PLEA 2018 conferences in Edinburghand Hong Kong. He was president of the Society of Building Science Educators(SBSE) and chair of the solar buildings division of the American Solar EnergySociety (ASES). His students have received multiple international awards andhis 4thyear architectural design studio was recently selected asone of seven Innovative Courses by 2030 Architecture.

Dr. La Roche is a registered architect in Venezuela, an associateAIA in the United States and a LEED BD+C professional. Among his awards are theFulbright Fellowship by the United States Department of State and theChancellors Fellowship by the University of California Los Angeles, theVolunteer IMPACT Award from the USGBC, the EDUCATE Prize in Europe, and theNational Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) Grand Prize forthe department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona in 2008. His work wasselected for the exhibit “New Blood: Next Gen” in the A+D Architectural Museumin Los Angeles, California in 2006 and La Roche was co-Curator of the exhibit“Technology and Environment: The Postwar House in Southern California”,supported by the Getty Institute as part of the series Pacific Standard Time in2013.

帕布洛拉罗什博士是美国CallisonRTKL建筑设计公司可持续设计部门负责人，以及加州理工Pomona分校（Cal Poly Pomona）建筑系教授。他是2016年国际被动式低能耗建筑大会（PLEA2016）组委会主席，美国建筑技术教育学会（SBSE）主席，以及美国太阳能学会（ASES）太阳能建筑分会主席。拉罗什教授毕业于UCLA获得博士学位，在可持续低碳设计理论和实践方面拥有超过25年专业经验。其研究领域主要涉及建筑被动式致凉系统、垂直绿化、以及低能耗低碳建筑设计，发表相关论文130余篇，专著《碳中和建筑设计》（第2版，2017年出版）。
