Performance's Echo: A Historical Retrospective through Case Study of Latin American Modern Architecture

图片

In 20th century, Latin American modern architects in different countries and regions offered a diversity of design responses to specific climates and uses. The purpose of examining these historical thoughts and practices is twofold: how modern architects defined performance-based design in the specific context of Latin America, and whether it was the same as in other regions; whether Latin American modern architecture expanded or changed the meaning of performance and in what sense it contributed to contemporary architecture. The lecture has two parts: first, it will examine the work of the Uruguayan modern architect Eladio Dieste and the Mexican modern architect Felix Candela in order to discuss performance-based design strategies; Second, a selection of works by contemporary Latin American architects will be reviewed whether the idea of performance has changed under contemporary technological and social context, and how design strategies are changed under those conditions.
