Lecture

The Entangle between Art and Technology in History

Architectural Artistic Styles versus Materials, Structure, and Construction

图片

The lecture explores the inherent logical connection between technical aspects (such as structure and construction) and artistic expression (such as space and form) in architectural design, using four categories of building materials (masonry, reinforced concrete, wood, and steel) as a guiding thread. It analyzes how the development of construction techniques has continuously influenced the evolution of architectural artistic styles in history. Through selected historical examples from different periods, the lecture illustrates the logical connection between local behavior, construction detail, and global architectural design concepts. The aim is to help students understand, through these examples, the logical principles that enable the control of local details from a global conceptual level.

Dr. Cao Ting is an assistant professor in the School of Architecture at Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen (HITSZ). She got her Doctoral Degree of Science from the Chair of Structural Design in the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich, where She worked as a research assistant and postdoctoral researcher for seven years. Her current researches mainly focus on novel design approaches to technical issues in architecture. Specific research areas include freeform surface design and construction, computational form-finding base on 3D graphic statics, energy-integrated structural design, and reuse of structures.
