Symposium Background
Describing the complexity of cities and architecture reflects a common goal of both the natural and social sciences. Architecture itself has become increasingly complex with the expansion of functions, technological advances, the complexity of life, and changes in the built environment. Contemporary architecture is increasingly characterized by a multifaceted complexity that manifests itself as a complex relationship between architectural function, architectural representation, architectural technology, architectural aesthetics, architectural design, and even in combination with artificial intelligence. Urban design and urban planning are also characterized by complex systems, and complexity, as a paradigm for studying urban and architectural issues from a holistic point of view, shows complexity mechanisms with variations in different spatial scales of cities, buildings and infrastructures. Cities and architecture, as complex systems, are not arbitrary artifacts, but spatial practices in total. Complex systems as a concept in architecture and urban design research and teaching, especially in sustainable cities and human-centered design practices, has ultimately influenced the development of global international policy agreements such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The 5th Symposium on Urban Design Research and Teaching 2025 will be organized under the theme “The City and Architecture as Complex Systems – Research and Teaching Perspectives on Regeneration and Transformation Urban Futures”, will be held on July 13-15, 2025 at the Technische Universität Berlin. The symposium continues the academic convening mechanism of Tsinghua University, and is co-hosted by Tongji University and TU-Berlin. The symposium is supported by the National Key R&D Program of China under the framework of the broader program “Research on Architecture–Urban Integration in Sustainable Development” (Project No. 2023YFC3804100). The symposium invited experts and scholars in the field of architecture and urban design from Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Southeast University, Tianjin University, Technische Universität Berlin, Pusan National University, etc., to focus on the cross-scalar impacts of city, architecture, and infrastructures in complex systems, and to share the results of their cutting-edge researches, teachings, and practices in the field of architecture and urban regeneration, and explore the sustainable future of architecture and urban transformation.
