An essential survey of the Achitectural works of Aldo & Hannie van Eyck

Known as the father of Dutch modernism, Aldo van Eyck was instrumental in defining the landscape of postwar architecture. His designs foregrounded the importance of the lived experience of the inhabitants of each building, and these social concerns are clearly apparent in the choice of projects profiled in this book. Beginning with iconic works such as the public playgrounds of Amsterdam whose minimalist aesthetic style was designed to stimulate creative play, and which ultimately influenced generations of children across the world, this publication also showcases less-known later works. The boldly colourful ESTEC communal building, and the Court of Audit in The Hague with its undulating façade. 24 key works, which were developed in collaboration with his wife and partner Hannie van Eyck, are presented through full-bleed photographs, as well as site plans and elevations.

These include iconic works that made their name, such as the public playgrounds of Amsterdam,. and the municipal orphanage composed of multiple modules on one level. Their later work of the 1980s and 1990s, which includes the boldly colourful ESTEC communal building, and Court of Audit in The Hague.

Hermann Czech, born in 1936, is one of Austria’s most eminent and influential architects and theorists. This influence is based not only on his work as a designing architect, which extends to furniture, interiors, and exhibitions. Czech is also widely admired just as much for his writings on architectural theory and as the editor and translatior of classics of architectural history, including texts by Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Josef Frank, and Christopher Alexander, among others.

This book is the long-awaited updated and expanded English edition of the only full monograph on Hermann Czech to date. First published in German in 2018, it goes far beyond a mere presentation of an architecture practice’s buildings and projects. The first part traces what links Czech’s work to the approaches of Viennese modernism. The second part explores Czech’s biography and the trajectory of his career, analyzing as well the contemporary influences that shape his thinking and designs. The third part features selected buildings and unrealized projects, setting forth also Czech’s numerous references and underlying reflections. A complete index of his buildings, projects, and writings, an essay by Vienna-based philosopher Elisabeth Nemeth on the relationship between architecture and philosophy in Czech’s work, and an introduction by architectural historian Liane Lefaivre round off this volume.

London 1950–2000>

Blackheath and Greenwich, in the southeast of London, proved to be an unusually fertile ground for modern architecture in the decades following WWII. Housing in particular became the prime field of work for many architecture firms, who designed a large number of residential buildings of various typologies, using new concepts and trying new solutions, inspired by the spirit and political developments of the time.

Modern Buildings in Blackheath and Greenwich is based on an extensive research project by architect Ana Francisco Sutherland. It analyzes and celebrates outstanding buildings by well-known architects such as Eric Lyons, Patrick Gwynne, Peter Moro, Walter Greaves, and Chamberlin, Powell & Bon, alongside works by lesser-known firms. A total of 64 individual buildings and housing developments by 38 architects are featured with images, plans, and concise texts.

Sutherland also takes a broader look at the evolution of modern English architecture in the context of social and housing policies of the time. Brief biographical portraits reveal personal connections between protagonists that made Blackheath and Greenwich such an extraordinary field of design experimentation over five decades.

An enclosed map with suggested routes makes the volume also a guide of extraordinary detail for architects and architecture lovers alike.

05.<Building Berlin, Vol. 11:

The latest architecture in and out of the capital>

图片

New architectural impulses from Berlin

Whether new buildings, additions, or restructuring – construction never stops in Berlin, demonstrating the diverse way in which building culture contributes to society’s development. This volume presents examples of these activities: current projects in Berlin and around the world, conceived and designed by architects, urban planners, interior designers and landscape architects of Berlin. More than ever before, the main focus lies on the sustainable preservation of existing structures.

Renowned authors present essays highlighting the value of the constructed environment we already have. They demonstrate how even buildings earmarked for demolition can become exciting homes, how clever ideas can breathe new life into apparently outdated old buildings, and how transport and open spaces can be integrated into increasingly constricted urban settings.

First published in 2017 in conjunction with an exhibition at the Pavillon de l'Arsenal in Paris, this widely praised and much sought-after book becomes available again in a new edition. It offers an analytical review from today's perspective of the French capital's profound transformation during the late 19th century under the direction Georges Eugène Haussmann.

Paris Haussmann: A Model's Relevance explores and analyses the characteristics of Paris's homogenous yet polymorphous cityscape, the result of a lengthy process of changes and evolutions, even in recent times. Research was conducted at all levels to classify and compare roadways, identify public spaces, and organize the blocks and buildings according to their current geometry. For the first time, the qualities of the Haussmann model have been set forth to show how they grapple with the challenges that contemporary cities face.

Topical essays feature alongside rich illustrative material, comprising photographs by celebrated photographer Cyrille Weiner, site plans and maps, floor plans and sections, axonometric projections, and various graphics.

Zhu Pei's Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum recalls a time of glory of the once “Millenium Porcelain Capital” city, Jingdezhen, and extends these memories to the present. Inspired by the perception of Jingdezhen's specific regional culture (porcelain) and the survival wisdom of the locals, the museum is a symbol of the past and future. The contemporary architecture magnificently resonates the ages: the building form is reminiscent of ancient traditional brick kilns, and its landscape ― with mirror pools, bamboo groves, kiln ruins, and courtyards ― recreates an impression of Jingdezhen's vibrant porcelain past. As an Architecture of Nature, that evokes both contemporaneity and ancient vibes, the museums subverts typical perceptions of modern-day museums. Colored photos, drawings, essays, and interviews provide detailed insights on the conception of the museum ― from design concept to environmental strategies, to construction techniques and construction materials ― as well as the architect's personal perspectives on the overall concept and intention of the museum. The pages also feature commentaries on the museum by well-known architects, including Steven Holl, Kenneth Frampton, Mohsen Mostafavi, Rem Koolhaas, and Arata Isozaki.

08.<Prosperous Lishui:

A Project for Suburban China>

图片
图片

The unprecedented growth faced by the Chinese cities in the last decades entailed seriousconsequences: economic and social disparities, environmental crises, and demographic imbalances between the rural and the urban areas. These issues, together with a growing awareness of the intrinsic unsustainability of Chinese economic model, has stimulat d debate on how redefining the approach to urban development.

In this framework, Lishui, a minor municipality of Zhezjiang Province, launched the international competition Future ShanShui City. Dwellings in Lishui Mountains in 2020. In line with the main policies enacted at national level, this competition highlights the need of new spatial relations between urban and rural. This approach leads to a radical reconfiguration of the suburban spaces, which is giving rise to an unprecedented landscape where urban services are integrated in the countryside areas, and, vice versa, agriculture and environmental elements are part of the city.

The publication explores the ongoing processes of suburbanization in Lishui Valley based on three years of design, research and teaching activities carried out by Politecnico di Torino and South China University of Technology since 2020. With a rich collection of original essays and projects, this book combines reflexive knowledge, critical imagination, and design experimentation to provide scenarios for Chinese suburban development.

12.<Stone Age:

Ancient Castles of Europe>

图片

Follow photographer Frédéric Chaubin as he embarks on a unique, century-spanning journey through Europe. Featuring images of more than 200 buildings in 21 countries, Stone Age presents the history and architecture of the most dramatic medieval castles of the continent in an unprecedented collection.

Building on the success of his foray into Soviet design with CCCP, Chaubin once again documents the afterlife of highly rational structures that seem out of place in a modern-day world. Precursors of Brutalism, these castles value function over form and epitomize the raw materials and shapes that would go on to define so much of architectural history.

Shot on film with a Linhof view camera, the collection is the outcome of five years of travel and investigation. Complete with a practical map and explanatory essay, its castles tell the story of 400 years, unfolding through the feudal Middle Ages into the 15th century.

A photographic study of decay as much as endurance, Stone Age traces the history of some of these singular structures that continue to enchant their audiences today and that occupy a distinct, mystical place in our collective imagination.

This grand opus assembles the people and the pieces at the heart of the Art Deco movement at each stage of its enduring appeal. The History of the Art Deco Style is richly illustrated with the work of legendary designers and decorators Eileen Gray, Paul Iribe, Antoine Bourdelle, Armand-Albert Rateau and Jean Dunand, among others. Ever since its early 20th-century origins, Art Deco has fascinated and amused socialites, collectors and designers. Referred to at the time as moderne, the style largely took shape around a clientele of French fashion industry luminaries and wealthy international collectors. Art historians christened it during a second wave in the '60s, while a third generation of afficionados entered the auction houses of the '80s and '90s, ready to invest in the most exquisite examples. Curated by art consultant and author Alastair Duncan, this detailed historical account is the gold-standard visual guide to the decorative arts.

The work of two leading Surrealist artists

Published on occasion of the exhibition Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy: Ring of Iron, Ring of Wool curated by Dr Victoria-Noel-Johnson, Marzina Marzetti (Director of the Helly Nahmad Gallery) in collaboration with Derek Des Islets and Matthew Foster, Helly Nahmad Gallery, New York, this catalogue explores the work of Kay Sage (American, 1898-1963) and Yves Tanguy (French-American, 1900-1955), two eminent Surrealist artists who married in 1940. Particular attention will be given to Sage’s fascinating life and extraordinary work, which has long been obscured by her relationship with the better-known Tanguy, a key figure of French Surrealism. As such, the publication will analyse the various stages of Sage’s life and career in Italy and Paris before returning to New York in 1939, parallel to Tanguy’s own exceptional work of the late 1920s – early 1950s, with the aim of highlighting how their personal and professional trajectories affected their respective work and careers thereafter. Sage’s dedication to promoting and safeguarding Tanguy’s legacy following his premature death in 1955 will also be explored.

This book shows how the broken can be as beautiful or valuable as the new - Topics such as sustainability and the circular economy have never been more urgent - Lavishly illustrated with over 200 illustrations and behind-the-scene shots - Includes inspiring makers, artists and designers from around the globe We live in a single-use society, where fashion is fast, disposability is the norm and it is easier to replace than to repair. We don't need to mend things anymore - and yet we do. What is it about Homo faber - man the maker - that cannot resist fixing what is broken? As we start to decouple from the linear take-make-waste model that has dominated Western economies since the Industrial Revolution and seek something more circular, an enquiry into what mending means has never been more urgent. With a foreword by The Repair Shop's Jay Blades, this new book by craft and circularity advocate Katie Treggiden celebrates 25 artists, curators, designers and makers who have rejected the allure of the fast, disposable and easy in favor of the patina of use, the stories of age and the longevity of care and repair. Accompanying these profiles, six in-depth essays explore the societal, cultural and environmental roles of mending in a throwaway world.
