From Material to Space
Internationally renowned ceramic artist Jacques Kaufmann will take his creative energy and works as the main thread to introduce his creative philosophy: the inheritance of history encompasses not only techniques and knowledge but also the experiences of those who developed and transmitted them. Human history is the history of people, and the history of ceramics is the history of those who define, create, and use ceramics. Particularly reflecting on his decade-long creative journey in China, Kaufmann did not merely study traditional Chinese craftsmanship himself. Instead, he integrated the techniques of Chinese ceramics, the ancient Chinese artisans who originated these methods, and the contemporary Chinese practitioners who carry them forward as raw materials for his own artistic exploration. The theme of this lecture, From Material to Space, delves into the infinite possibilities of materials. Kaufmann has constructed a framework of three quadrants based on his own creations, exploring discussions on materials, space, and the shaping process. Through his work, he seeks to develop a creative methodology that allows the inherent properties of materials and their interrelationships to generate countless solutions. Within this triangular system, the individuality of the creator is revealed when choices are made.
