【Lecture 03.12.2024】 The Equation of Architecture
Release time:2024-12-01

Introduction

Simplicity and perfection, rigor and innovation, economy and an unforgettable impression—these are not contradictory concepts for schneider+schumacher, but rather the essential components of excellent architecture in the broadest sense. Good architecture should invite people to linger and embody its unique character.

From the Memorial to the Unity of Germany to over 100 projects completed by Professor Schumacher in 35 years, he has consistently adhered to a poetic pragmatism approach, seeking solutions amidst today's highly complex demands. His designs embody logic while conveying perception, carving out spaces while sketching scenes, ultimately presenting a poetics of construction (pragmatic poetry) grounded in clear structural logic and precise quality control.

In this lecture, Professor Schumacher will illustrate the practice of poetic pragmatism in design projects through case studies such as the Memorial to the Unity of Germany, Autobahn church siegerland, Germany, the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Center, and the renovation of the Mathildehohe Exhibition Hall, a World Cultural Heritage site.
