Speaker
Prof. Ole Bouman
From February to July 2024, Professor Ole Bouman embarked on a journey from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Shanghai, China, which covered 18 countries over 156 days. He rode an 18-kilo bicycle carrying 45 kilograms of luggage, experienced 3 tire punctures, crossed approximately 300 rivers and creeks, climbed over 100 mountain ranges, traversed 3 deserts, and encountered 3 seasons. He used 8 currencies, crossed 16 language zones, engaged with 9 world religions, visited 500 historical landmarks from Karl Marx's homeland to Laozi's birthplace, organized 5 public events, traversed 1 war zone and 5 conflict areas, witnessed 100 war memorials, and documented 1000 moments of peace. This journey, viewed through the lens of cycling along the Silk Road, facilitates dialogue between Eastern and Western civilizations, using the bicycle as a pen to draw a narrative of peace and integration across the continent. In this lecture, Professor Ole Bouman will particularly focus on the architectural dimension to unfold this journey from Amsterdam to Shanghai.
