As a continuation of the ‘Back to fundamentals’ series 2023, this 2024 lecture takes up the subject of graphic statics and specifies its role in structural design. After introducing on possible uses of graphic statics, whether as an analytical or integral tool, the lecture will re-establish step by step some elements of graphic statics for structural analysis and design. Beyond the simple equilibrium in the triangle of forces, Graphic statics has applications for the representation of complex structural problems, for the analysis of beams and trusses, for the design of arches, reticular systems and equilibrium figures for plastic design with STM (strut-and-tie modelling) in concrete. The presentation covers structural design with 3D vector graphic statics, with examples of force-based approaches with CEM [combinatorial equilibrium modelling] and form-based approaches with VGS plug-in [vectorial graphic statics]. Finally, the presentation will show how, once the structural behaviour has been assessed, the use of the VGS environment can guide structural refinement according to a few numerical strategies.

the UCLouvain

Denis Zastavni is Dr. Engineer Architect and Professor in the Louvain research institute for Landscape, Architecture, Built environment [LAB] and at the Faculty of Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urbanism [LOCI] of the UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. He has first worked as a structural engineer and architect for over a decade. His PhD was on Robert Maillart’s design methods and won the Premio Edoardo Benvenuto in 2008. His main publications are on structural design, pedagogical approaches in teaching structure, and Robert Maillart’s designs. With his team, his current research is focused on structural design approaches and tools, analysis of historical structures, history of the design of structures, graphic statics, timber constructions and on deepening his knowledge of Robert Maillart’s structural methods.
