On May 20-23, 2024, the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University collaborated with Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany, in a joint workshop titled Research on Architecture and Urban Space. This event was not only a part of Tongji University's 117th anniversary celebrations but also a significant academic activity under the framework of the Sino-Germany Cooperation 2.0 Support and Development Plan.
Participating in the joint workshop, the German team comprised Professor Michael Schumacher, the former Dean of the School of Architecture and Landscape, researcher Christian Eickelberg, researcher Lisa Flöter, and 24 architecture students. The Tongji team, led by Vice director LIU Kan from the Architecture Department and Director Li Wei from the College International Office, brought 12 graduate students from the Architecture Department to engage in exchanges and learning with the German faculty and students.
On May 20th, an opening ceremony was held for the joint workshop. Vice Dean Philip Feng Yuan warmly welcomed the visiting faculty and students from Germany, introducing an overview of CAUP in terms of teaching, research, and international cooperation. He also extended his best wishes for the success of the joint workshop.
Over the following days, the Sino-Germany team delved into the intricate relationship between various architectural types and urban spaces through three field studies and three professional lectures. They also analyzed the differences in this relationship within the distinct teaching systems of China and Germany. At three design practices with unique styles - gmp, Tongji University Architectural Design & Research Institute (Group) Co., Ltd., and Neri&Hu Design and Research Office - the faculty and students gained extensive knowledge of various architectural projects, listened to the design concepts behind them, and received a comprehensive cultural experience in architecture.
On May 23rd, the professional lecture and discussion session was hosted by LIU Kan. Professor WANG Yi, the Director of the Architecture Department, also attended and warmly welcomed the faculty and students from Leibniz Universität Hannover. He expressed his hope that the next Sino-German joint workshop could be held in Hannover, continuing the traditional friendship between Tongji and Germany.
