Architecture
as a Planetary Science
Co-agency, Co-pilot and Co-existence
Over the past 13 years, DigitalFUTURES has brought together architects and instructors from around the world to offer a series of lectures and workshops, growing substantially into a shared global platform accessible to scholars, architects, and students worldwide. This year, DigitalFUTURES 2024, with the theme Architecture as a Planetary Science: Co-agency, Co-pilot and Co-existence, will further explore the technological emergence within the global view, focusing on the intersection of AI technology and the built environment, unfolding the potential of digital technology to transform the way we approach globalization.
Amidst the Anthropocene epoch, the notion of co-agency prompts a profound reevaluation of the subject-object dynamic within design practice, reframing humans, nature, technology, and society as interwoven constituents of a unified whole, rather than discrete entities. Guided by this ethos, designers embark on a journey of collaborative inquiry, exploring how to forge symbiotic relationships with natural elements to engender architectural and urban environments that seamlessly integrate with their surrounding milieu. Co-piloting ignites a spirit of innovation, compelling us to harness cutting-edge digital technologies to steer urban development toward a balanced convergence of environmental preservation and societal advancement. Co-existence underscores the imperative of fostering symbiosis with the contextual fabric and natural ecosystems, advocating for the creation of inclusive, interconnected spaces that nurture the flourishing of both human and non-human inhabitants. Under the theme Architecture as a Planetary Science: Co-agency, Co-pilot and Co-existence, DigitalFUTURES 2024 will organize a series of workshops, lectures, international conferences, and exhibitions. Through the exchange of ideas and insights, we hope to inspire a new generation of architects and designers to embrace the vision of a more harmonious, sustainable, and aesthetically enriching planet.
