Abstract:
In general, the urban fabric is the urban land use pattern, which determines the basic law of urban special formation. Urban land use pattern is presented through basic urban elements of land lot - building type - block - street – urban zone. This lecture talks about five cases of European city to objectively present so-called urban fabric. European cities have the greatest continuity in their evolution, and today's European cities are the result of long iterations of regeneration, each of which has followed clear land use rules that correspond to the specificities of the era, while integrating (juxtaposing or superimposing) different development phases that go beyond a thousand years. Since the Renaissance, European urban land use patterns have been planned and have resulted in urban building typologies adapted to them. Without understanding the European case, it is difficult to understand the logic of land use in major American cities (central urban areas with high-density characteristics) and Asian cities. By juxtaposing international city cases, common urban land use patterns will be clearly indicated.
Zhu Yixin and Ji Huaiqian, two students who participated in Prof. Sha’s urban design courses will also briefly share learning points on this topic.
