Topic: England's Evolving Planning System: Changing Structures and New Debates Summary The UK's comprehensive planning system was established after World War II. Since devolution of planning powers to Scotland and Wales, England's system has taken its own path, redesigning its core structures and introducing new ways to plan - largely though a localisation of responsibility to the smallest units of local government, and communities, and through ongoing deregulations that give greater power to market actors. In this talk, I overview the key features of the system, recent and ongoing changes, and critical current debates. Attention is drawn, in particular, to the removal of strategic planning, the current challenges around local plan delivery, and the impacts of planning deregulation.
