Founder and Principal, Lütjens Padmanabhan Architects

Oliver Lütjens (Zurich 1972) and Thomas Padmanabhan (Stuttgart 1970) established Lütjens Padmanabhan Architects in 2007 in Zurich. The practice’s recent work focuses on housing in the residential districts surrounding Zurich, Basel and Zug including the award-winning low rent Waldmeisterweg apartment building in Zurich and the Zwhatt Sufficiency lighthouse project in Regensdorf. Further, they are currently working on the new residence of the Swiss ambassador in Algiers, the Unterfeld Energy Center in Zug, and the new residential development Göbli in Baar. Oliver and Thomas have taught as assistants at ETH Zurich, and as guest professors at TU Munich, EPF Lausanne and Harvard GSD. They are currently guest professors at ETH Zurich.

The architectural form of the future will be a composite figure. As a response to the multitude of ecological, social and economic challenges, buildings will contain a complex combination of often conflicting technological and social innovations. Buildings will appear as constructs that are assembled by an array of materials and technologies, each serving a specific purpose. This will require a new way of understanding construction. It will also require a new way of seeing architecture. We will need a new visual assembly, a new sense of tectonics: a culture of loose arrangements that requires a more complex way of perceiving unity in diversity. Our tolerance towards ambiguity will increase. We will leave behind the scaffolding of old formulas and gain new expressive freedom.
