Studio Final Review | Taipu Canal: A Territorial Spine for the Jiangnan Park(Yangtze River Delta)
Fig.1 Framed by natural and urban elements, characterized by diverse polder landscapes and articulated by two major canals, the vast area between Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou can be seen as the green heart of the YRD megacity region (Nolf & Xie,2020).
Taipu is a 75 km-long drainage canal linking Taihu Lake to Shanghai across the ecological sensitive polder areas of the Taihu Basin. The studio explores how this technical infrastructure can be upgraded into a multifunctional spine articulating open spaces, framing new urban developments, and interconnecting historic water towns. The studio aims to contribute to the Integrated Regional Development Plan of the Yangtze River Delta, and in particular to the regional vision of “Jiangnan Park” to qualify the vast area between Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou.

Fig.2 Sites at XL, L, M scales (Nolf, 2020)
The studio works at different scales simultaneously. At the territorial scale, the studio explores the canal at the very large scale, from Tai Lake to the Huangpu River in Shanghai. The aim is to identify, per thematic program, the main characteristics, challenges and opportunities encountered along its 75 km long route. At the intermediate scale, a number of strategic transects (5 km*10 km) are selected and investigated by the studio, these zooms serves as a pilot projects to test thematic programs ‘on the ground’, and formulate strategic projects. At the local scale, finally, a strategic site or spatial system (1 km*1 km) is defined to develop and design an urban design or landscape project.
STUDIO | ZJU+ XJTLU+TJU Joint Studio
The workshop is composed of three parallel studios held by the Institute of Landscape Architecture at Zhejiang University, The Department of Urban Planning and Design at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and The Department of Landscape Study at Tongji University. The idea is to mobilize the local knowledge and resources from the three provinces crossed by Taipu Canal. During the studio, a combination of lectures, fieldwork, design charrette and co-productive sessions with local stakeholders leads to the elaboration of concrete proposal.
