Brief Introduction

Computational urban design is an exploration on how to make the city a better place by using digital technology. With the help of new urban data and computational algorithms generated from new urban science, I am seeking to introducing new digital technology into the previously qualitative and intuition-based fields of urban design. This new research field contains three research directions, i.e., data-informed urban design, evidence-based urban design, and algorithm-driven urban design. A series of researches would be introduced in this seminar as an illustration of these three directions. By combining science, technology and design together, computational urban design would help to pushing the methodological boundaries of these traditional disciplines.

计算性城市设计是对如何利用数字技术使城市变得更好的一种探索。借助于新的城市科学所产生的新的城市数据和计算算法，寻求将新的数字技术引入之前基于定性和直觉的城市设计领域。这一新的研究领域包括三个方向，即以数据为基础的城市设计、基于实证的城市设计和算法驱动的城市设计。本次讲座将介绍这三个方向的一系列研究。通过将科学、技术和设计结合在一起，计算性城市设计将有助于拓展传统学科的方法边界。

Dr. ir. Yu YE is an Associate Professor from College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University, where he directs the Computational Urban Design Lab (https://www.tjcud.cn/). Dr. Ye earned his MSC in TU Delft, Netherlands and Ph.D. from University of Hong Kong. After that, he had worked as a post-doctoral researcher at Future Cities Lab, ETH Zurich, Switzerland before he joined in Tongji University. Dr. Ye’s research focuses on quantitative urban morphology and computational urban design by integrating new urban science with traditional requirements. Dr. Ye have published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles in this field, with two best research paper awards from Urban Planning Society of China, and five research grants from National Science Foundation of China and other government agencies. As a chartered urban planner in China and Urban Designer in the Netherlands, he consults widely for industry in urban design, urban analytics and urban planning, endeavouring to apply research insights to practical decision-making.

叶宇，博士，同济大学建筑与城市规划学院副教授，计算城市设计实验室主任(https://www.tjcud.cn/)，拥有荷兰杜代夫特理学硕士学位和香港大学博士学位。在加入同济大学之前，他曾在瑞士苏黎世ETH未来城市实验室担任博士后研究员。他的研究通过将新的城市科学与传统要求相结合，专注于定量城市形态和计算城市设计，在该领域发表了60多篇同行评议的期刊文章，获得了中国城市规划学会颁发的两项最佳研究论文奖，以及中国国家科学基金会和其他政府机构颁发的五项研究资助。作为中国的特许城市规划师和荷兰的城市设计师，他为城市设计、城市分析和城市规划行业提供广泛咨询，努力将研究见解应用于实际决策。
