On the evening of June 14, the award ceremony for the 2026 CAUP Student Architecture Award was held at the B1 Lecture Hall of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, Tongji University. Three awards were presented at the ceremony: Urban Renewal Award, Landscape Space Award, and Young Architect Award.

The CAUP Students' Architecture Award was initiated by Professor Wilfried Wang, continuing the tradition of his architecture criticism seminars at Harvard University and the University of Texas at Austin. This award is intended to assess students’ ability to combine critical analysis of architecture with the organization of practical activities. All students enrolled in the seminar serve as the judging panel. They will elect a chair and a secretary, who will be responsible for presiding over joint meetings and taking minutes, respectively. The student jury collectively discusses the evaluation criteria and the list of candidate projects, nominates a long list and a short list of candidates, and ultimately selects the winners based on on-site project visits. The students will also organize the schedule for the awards ceremony.

RENOVATION
简介 Introduction
The renovation category includes projects that transform existing buildings through substantial spatial, structural, or programmatic interventions. Rather than focusing only on preservation, this category highlights projects that critically engage with the existing fabric and adapt it to contemporary social, cultural, or environmental needs.

The project explores the transformation of a compact urban building into a contemporary exhibition and retail space within Shanghai’s historic fabric. The intervention preserves the original urban scale while introducing transparent façades and sculptural concrete elements. An asymmetrical structural system enhances spatial continuity and visual permeability between interior and exterior spaces. The project reinterprets the relationship between commercial activity, exhibition space, and everyday urban life.

CONTEXT LANDSCAPE
简介 Introduction
The context landscape category includes projects that engage with landscape not only as an external green or open space, but as an essential part of the architectural concept. This category therefore considers both landscape design and newly built architecture that actively responds to, frames, transforms, or redefines its surrounding context. The selected projects should demonstrate a meaningful relationship between building, site, ecology, and public use, rather than treating landscape as a secondary decorative element.

Set along Jinhai Lake, the project develops a clear dialogue between built form and the surrounding water landscape. Architectural volume defined by a continuous, curvilinear envelope, where façade and roof are read as a single formal system. The composition emphasizes spatial continuity and a dynamic perception of the building from multiple viewpoints. Digital geometric control supports the precision of the surfaces and their material continuity.

This project explores the construction of a neighborhood symbiosis through a series of small-scale interventions in the fragmented and residual spaces of an existing urban fabric. With a lightweight and collaborative approach, it transforms fenced areas, underused spaces, and infrastructural edges into shared public places that activate new relationships among residents, shop owners, institutions, and community services. The strategy is based on reorganizing urban property into four categories — governmental, collective, private, and institutional — in order to experiment with different forms of openness and public use. Through the removal of fences, the reuse of leftover spaces, and the insertion of social functions, the project builds a network of micro-public spaces that strengthens everyday neighborhood life.
