Lecture Description:
How can urban scholars develop a critical understanding of recent changes in the structure and experiences of cities? Many of these changes are considered under the loose concepts of “globalization” and “gentrification,” and we easily recognize their visible signs in the urban landscape. But can our research reshape market pressures and public policies to preserve the “authentic” experience of cities? How can we express the everyday experience of social diversity, sociability, and human scale that creates value in urban life?Professor Zukin will speak about her book Naked City: The Death and Life of Authentic Urban Places, which is being translated by Shanghai People’s Publishing House.
