The beauty of making presented by craft has enchanted architects for long, while the comprehension of craft varies. To Heinz Bienefeld, craft is nothing but a way of fully presenting materials in accordance with existing norms and traditions. Being characterized by abstractness, Kazuo Shinohara’s houses, often addressing a desire to hide or even wipe out any hand-made traces, resists to the temptation of things. However, the Sachlichkeit in Shinohara’s houses bears no resemblance to that of Geoffrey Bawa’s. Bawa adopted an approach of suspending craft and preferred to juxtapose nature, artifacts and living habits on an equal level. When moving to North Europe, we often discover hidden impulses in a building that seems serene at first sight. Sigurd Lewerentz, famous for utilizing bricks, mortar and glass, regards the instrumentality of craft as a mere means of transcending any normal way. This lecture, exhibiting a comparative study of four aforementioned positions of these architects, attempts to provide a perspective of such issues as making, architectonic and materiality.
