Stormwater as Urban Design + Urban Design as Stormwater
This presentation is a report on an interdisciplinary Design+Research studio at Georgia Tech. The question posed was this: How can stormwater management contribute to urban design and how can urban design contribute to stormwater management? The studio selected four sites in Atlanta, each with very different stormwater challenges. The studio then developed stormwater strategies, and combined them with urban design proposals – including how land was organized for future development and how the public domain was designed - with specific attention to the tactical methods of BMP’s (best management practices) and LID’s (light impact development). The Design+Research studio yielded several conclusions to bring urban design and stormwater management together, in professional education and design and engineering practices, an essential step to develop more sustainable urban developments.
