Learning from Savannah
The Savannah, Georgia, historic district is recognized as one of the world’s most beautiful cities. Most historians, as well as architects, landscape architects and urban designers, described it as a one of a kind event in the history of cities because there is no evidence of the plan influencing other towns in America. However, if one examines General Oglethorpe’s plan closely, one finds three fundamental lessons for urban design: (1) Accommodating both accessibility and mobility, (2) Enabling diversity in many ways and (3) Facilitating change over time. And, these three lessons from Savannah are based in the cellular ward structure and its precise dimensions. Oglethorpe could not have imagined what Savannah looks like today, but the lessons from plan, created in 1733, are important ones for contemporary urban design.
