Culture is a powerful means of controlling cities. As a source of images and memories, it symbolizes "who belongs" in specific places. As a set of architectural themes, it plays a leading role in urban redevelopment strategies based on historic preservation or local "heritage." With the disappearance of local manufacturing industries and periodic crises in government and finance, culture is more and more the business of cities - the basis of their tourist attractions and their unique, competitive edge. The growth of cultural consumption of art, food, fashion, music, tourism, and the industries that cater to it fuels the city's symbolic economy, its visible ability to produce both symbols and space.

文化是控制城市的有力手段。作为城市景象和记忆的源泉,文化代表着“谁属于哪儿”的特定地方。作为一系列的建筑主题,文化在基于历史保护或者地方“遗产”的城市重构战略中发挥着引导作用。随着地方制造业的衰退以及政府和金融方面的定期危机,文化越来越成为城市的重要事务–成为城市的旅游景点和独特的竞争基础。艺术、餐饮、时尚、音乐、旅游以及相应的文化产业迎合了文化消费的增长,从而促进了城市的象征经济,使得符号与空间变得越来越可视。
